Eaton, Norwich – Pile Re-Capping And Straightening
Our customer contacted us looking for a cost effective solution to stabilise and re-cap their piling. Upon assessment, the galvanised m7 sheet piling was in an excellent condition and with the toe of the piling appearing to be in its originally installed position, it was deemed that movement had been caused by insufficient anchoring rather than the ground slipping.

Project details
Remove 38.1m of rotten timber capping
Replace with 75×225 Tanalised Redwood using m12 BZP coach bolts
Straighten piling using M20 bzp threaded bar and back fill
Resolution
We started by excavating behind the piling to reduce the load and to give a space for the piling to pull back into. We then installed the new 75×225 tanalised redwood timbers on the back and began the installation of the new tie rods. Using the excavator to help ease the piling, and the tie rods to hold it in place, we pulled it back to where we believe the original line was. We then installed the front 75×225 timbers with a staggered joint to sandwich the piling, giving additional strength. The top timber capping board was a 47×200 tanalised redwood, installed with a quality Spax screw to give a professional and aesthetic finish. We then back filled with the extracted soil and brought in an additional 4 tonnes of topsoil to fill the area in the corner that had washed out over the years. With over 16 years of experience, DRE Marine and Civils have seen a huge variety of different projects and overcome numerous obstacles, this project being no different. It was obvious to us the toe of the piling hadnt moved and that there was certainly no need to ‘throw the baby out with the bathwater’ so to speak. ‘We are delighted with everything DRE Civil’s have done. We are not engineers, and the quayside movement was an unknown to us. You guided and explained the process at every stage, the workmanship, your reassurance, that the whole garden wasn’t going to end up in the river, your dexterity using the 4th member of the team! Was great.
The attention to detail, in getting the quayside straighter than we could have imagined, and looking really smart. You left the site clean considering the amount of rain we had, and we have no reservation in recommending you to others, and have already done so.’
