Restoring and Enhancing a Mooring with a Natural Reed Bed Screen
Client: Private Residential Client
Project: Repiling and Redecking of an Existing Boat Cut/Mooring
Location: Norfolk Broads

Project details
This comprehensive project involved the complete restoration and enhancement of an existing boat cut and mooring area. The work included the replacement of old or damaged piles, the installation of a new Tanalised Redwood deck, and a unique landscaping feature: the incorporation of a reed bed to provide a natural, living screen for the new decking area. All materials and labour were conducted exclusively from the water using a pontoon, a crucial aspect of the project’s success.
Resolution
DRE Marine & Civils was engaged to provide a complete solution for the mooring’s revitalisation. Our approach was defined by precision, a focus on sustainability, and a strategy to overcome the logistical challenges of the waterside location:
Strategic Repiling: Our first step was to assess the existing piling. We systematically removed any compromised piles and installed new, robust ones to create a solid and durable foundation for the new deck. This critical phase ensured the long-term stability and safety of the mooring.
Tanalised Redwood Decking: We supplied and installed high-quality Tanalised Redwood for the new decking. This material was chosen for its excellent durability, resistance to rot and insect damage, and its warm, natural aesthetic. The wood’s treatment ensures a long service life, even in a damp, waterside environment. The decking was expertly laid to create a functional and attractive surface that seamlessly integrated with the surrounding water.
Integrated Reed Bed Screen: A key feature of this project was the innovative use of a reed bed. This was not only a visually pleasing, natural addition but also served a practical purpose as a privacy screen for the decking area. Our team carefully planted and established the reed bed, creating a living barrier that also contributes to the local ecosystem and provides habitat for wildlife.
Water-Based Logistics: A central challenge of this project was the inaccessibility from land. We overcame this by conducting all work, including the delivery of materials and the use of machinery, entirely from the water. Our use of a pontoon-based platform allowed us to perform the repiling and decking installation with minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape and property.
Results and Benefits
The successful completion of this project delivered a range of significant benefits for the client:
Enhanced Structural Integrity: The repiling work ensured a stable and safe mooring for the client’s vessel, providing peace of mind and long-term reliability.
Aesthetic and Functional Upgrade: The new Tanalised Redwood deck transformed the mooring area into a beautiful, useable space for recreation and relaxation.
Natural Privacy and Screening: The incorporated reed bed provides an effective, environmentally friendly screen that offers privacy without the need for artificial barriers.
Minimal Environmental Disruption: By conducting all work from the water, we avoided damage to the land-based garden or landscape and minimised the project’s overall environmental footprint.
Increased Property Value: The revitalised, high-quality, and unique mooring area significantly adds to the property’s appeal and value.
Ecosystem Contribution: The reed bed not only serves a functional purpose but also contributes to the health of the local ecosystem by providing a habitat for local flora and fauna.
